Dental emergencies can be incredibly stressful and painful. Whether you are suffering from an agonizing, throbbing toothache that keeps you awake all night, or have experienced direct physical facial trauma resulting in a fractured or dislodged tooth, immediate professional attention is vital.
At Dr Batra's Dental Hub, we provide priority emergency access for urgent care patients. We are fully equipped to perform emergency root canals, treat painful facial swelling, and stabilize knocked-out teeth using custom dental splints to preserve your smile.
Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
- Severe Toothaches: Urgent diagnostic scans and immediate nerve-relief therapies.
- Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Teeth: Re-implanting and splinting physical teeth back into place.
- Facial Swelling & Abscesses: Drainage, deep pocket irrigation, and fast-acting antibiotics.
- Broken or Chipped Teeth: Restoring enamel borders with cosmetic resins or protective dental caps.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency
Not everything needs to be seen today, and knowing the difference saves you an anxious night. These do need urgent attention:
- Facial swelling, particularly if it is spreading or closing an eye
- Swelling under the jaw or in the floor of the mouth, or difficulty swallowing or breathing — go to a hospital immediately
- Fever alongside dental pain
- A permanent tooth knocked out, or pushed out of position by trauma
- Uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction
- Severe pain that painkillers are not touching
These can usually wait for a next-day appointment: a lost filling or crown with no pain, a chipped tooth that is not sharp, mild sensitivity, or a broken denture. Read why tooth pain worsens at night if you are trying to get through until morning.
What to Do Before You Reach Us
- Knocked-out permanent tooth. Handle it by the crown, never the root. If clean, reimplant it into the socket and bite gently on cloth. If not, store it in milk — never water, and never let it dry. Time is critical; get seen within the hour if possible.
- Broken tooth. Rinse with warm water, cold compress outside the cheek, keep any fragments.
- Swelling. Cold compress, sleep propped up. Do not apply heat — it encourages infection to spread.
- Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown; avoid chewing on that side. Do not use household glue.
- Bleeding after extraction. Bite firmly on clean gauze for 30 minutes without checking. If it continues, call us.
What Not to Do
- Do not hold an aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue
- Do not start leftover antibiotics; they will not drain an abscess and may be the wrong drug
- Do not apply heat to a swelling
- Do not assume it has resolved because the pain stopped — pain ceasing can mean the nerve has died while infection continues
How We Prioritise Emergencies
Call or message us and describe what has happened. We will tell you honestly whether you need to be seen today, tomorrow, or at a routine appointment — and if it is something we cannot manage safely in a dental setting, we will say that too and direct you to hospital.
Genuine emergencies are prioritised within our opening hours: Monday to Saturday 10:30 AM–8:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM–12:00 PM. We are not a 24-hour service, and we would rather be straight with you about that than have you waiting on a call that will not be answered.
Treatment on the Day
Depending on the cause, this may be drainage of an abscess, root canal treatment to remove an infected nerve, a temporary dressing to settle things before definitive work, a re-cemented crown, or a gentle extraction where a tooth cannot be saved. The priority on the day is relieving pain and controlling infection; the permanent restoration follows.
