Ultrasonic Scaling & Airflow Prophylaxis

Professional teeth cleaning removes the hardened plaque and bacterial tartar (calculus) that bind tightly to enamel and escape daily brushing. Left untreated, tartar build-up triggers gum disease, chronic bad breath, and bleeding gums.
At Dr Batra's Dental Hub, we prioritize your physical comfort. We employ state-of-the-art ultrasonic scaling technology that vibrates tartar away gently, followed by airflow stain-polishing to remove coffee, tea, or smoking discoloration safely and cleanly.
Benefits of Our Scaling Treatment
- Enamel-Safe Ultrasonic Scaling: Rigid tartar is shattered with high-frequency sound waves, leaving the tooth surface safe and uninjured.
- Airflow Prophylaxis Stain Removal: Polishes away dark surface stains for an instantly brighter smile.
- Sub-gingival Irrigation: Thoroughly sterilizes the gumline to prevent bleeding and bone loss.
- Fluoride Enamel Varnish: Optional protective coat to reduce post-cleaning sensitivity and reinforce enamel.
Why Brushing Alone Is Not Enough
Plaque is a soft film you can remove with a brush. Left for 24 to 48 hours it mineralises into calculus — tartar — which is hard, porous and firmly bonded to the tooth. No amount of brushing, and no toothpaste, removes calculus. It has to be taken off mechanically, and its porous surface is an ideal home for the bacteria that drive gum disease.
How Often You Need It
Six-monthly suits most people. Three- to four-monthly is usually advised if you have a history of gum disease, are diabetic, smoke, wear fixed braces, or simply build up calculus quickly — some people do, through no fault of their brushing.
Does Scaling Damage Enamel or Loosen Teeth?
No — and both are common worries worth answering directly. Ultrasonic scaling works at a frequency that fractures calculus without cutting enamel; the tip vibrates rather than scrapes.
Teeth occasionally feel slightly different afterwards because heavy deposits that were splinting them together have been removed. That is not the cleaning loosening your teeth — it is revealing mobility the calculus was masking, which is exactly the problem the treatment addresses.
Will It Hurt?
Most patients describe vibration, water and noise rather than pain. Sensitivity is more likely if your gums are already inflamed or roots are exposed — tell us beforehand and we can work more gently or use anaesthetic. Any post-cleaning sensitivity usually settles within a few days.
Afterwards
- Mild gum tenderness for a day or two is normal, especially if there was significant inflammation
- Use a desensitising toothpaste if teeth feel sensitive to cold
- Avoid strongly staining food and drink for 24 hours after polishing
- Gums may bleed slightly for a few days as inflamed tissue heals — keep brushing gently through it
- Clean between the teeth daily; that is what determines how long the result lasts
Cleaning and Whitening Are Not the Same Thing
Scaling removes deposits and surface staining, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter — but it does not change the natural colour of the enamel. If you want a genuine shade change, that is whitening, and it works far better on a freshly cleaned tooth surface.
